Corey Seager is going to miss a few games due to some left hamstring tightness, but luckily he’s dodging the injured list. Manager Bruce Bochy mentioned on Friday that Seager did some light jogging but is still “not quite ready” to play.
To make up for Seager's absence, the Rangers decided to reinforce their bench by calling up infielder Davis Wendzel from Triple-A Round Rock. Wendzel, who had a tough stint with the Rangers earlier this season, hitting just 2 for 29 (.069), has been doing better in the minors with a .262/.373/.405/.777 slash line over 12 games.
With Wendzel back, the Rangers had to make room on the roster, so outfielder Derek Hill was designated for assignment. Hill, who hasn't started a game since May 22, had a decent start with the Rangers but went 0 for 6 in his last four appearances. If Hill clears waivers, the team hopes to keep him in Triple-A.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Corey Seager: Out with hamstring tightness, avoiding the injured list.
- Davis Wendzel: Recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
- Derek Hill: Designated for assignment, potential return to Triple-A.
In Seager's absence, Josh Smith has stepped in at shortstop and hit second in the lineup, while Ezequiel Duran is covering third base. Bochy mentioned they needed to “cover themselves in the infield,” hence the recall of Wendzel. The Rangers are hopeful Seager will be back soon, but for now, they’re making do with what they’ve got.
