Channel 2 Action News got rare, behind-the-scenes access to the Mega Millions drawing studio—yes, the exact spot where tonight’s winning numbers will drop. You can catch the official drawing right before WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.
While touring the studio, Channel 2’s Jorge Estevez stepped next door to the secure draw room, where everything revolves around one thing: absolute integrity. The team doesn’t take any chances. The drawing machines stay locked up, and only authorized staff can access them.
One of the standout moments came from Ed Katich, the vice president of Risk and Compliance, who explained just how precise the process is.
Key highlights:
-
Every ball is weighed and measured when it first arrives
-
The Georgia Department of Agriculture even helps verify the specs
-
There are 70 white balls and 24 gold balls, all regularly tested for accuracy
Before each drawing, seven complete sets of balls are randomly chosen. After they’re used, they’re officially sealed—confirmed by both a draw specialist and an auditor.
Katich revealed the routine: “After they’re utilized, a seal goes on. Both the draw specialist and the auditor confirm it.” Everything is then stored safely—literally in a standard, locked safe each night.
The team also runs machine tests before the live drawing, repeatedly pulling five white balls and one gold ball to make sure the results stay totally random. Once the drawing starts, electricity, gravity, and host John Crow take over.
With strict camera coverage and a required number of staff on-site, the system is designed to keep the process clean, transparent, and secure.
