An investigation is underway in Oklahoma following the tragic death of a 16-year-old student after an altercation at Owasso High School earlier this month. The news has sparked widespread attention, especially due to claims of delayed action by school staff during the incident.

According to the Owasso Police Department, officers were called to Bailey Medical Center on Feb. 7 by the parent of a 16-year-old student from Owasso High School involved in a physical altercation at the school. The police were not informed of the fight until the parent's notification at the hospital. On Feb. 8, Owasso Police were notified that the teen had been rushed back to the hospital and was pronounced dead.

The teenager, identified as Nex Benedict, tragically passed away, though the official cause of death has not been disclosed by the state medical examiner yet. Nex's family expressed gratitude for the support received, acknowledging their learning process in correctly addressing their child's identity. The family held a funeral service for Nex on Feb. 15. Authorities have provided some information to dispel online rumors, but many details are still unknown.

Lt. Nick Boatman stated that police are actively investigating while awaiting autopsy and toxicology results, refraining from speculating on potential charges until more information is available. The police plan to interview students and teachers in the coming days and will collaborate with the Tulsa County district attorney’s office. Boatman mentioned the possibility of involving other agencies, such as the FBI, if they determine a major crime has occurred. The state medical examiner’s office indicated that a full investigation into the student’s death could take several months. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tulsa has not confirmed nor denied its involvement in the case.
