Israel Expands Control in Gaza Amid Escalating Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis

Israel Shifts Strategy in Gaza: Intensifying Military Operations and Territorial Control

In a significant shift, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are "switching gears" in Gaza. This move includes dividing and seizing more areas within the strip, a strategy that analysts suggest could lead to prolonged Israeli control over parts of the territory. The Israeli government maintains that its military actions will persist until Hamas agrees to revised ceasefire terms, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasizing plans to capture "large areas" of Gaza.

Escalation of Conflict: Bombing Campaign and Rising Death Toll

The situation in Gaza has grown increasingly dire. The region's health ministry reports that at least 100 people were killed in just 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 1,163 since Israel resumed military operations on March 18. The bombing campaign remains relentless, with Israel arguing that it is targeting Hamas infrastructure and command centers. However, civilian casualties continue to mount, intensifying international concern.

One of the most devastating incidents occurred when Israeli airstrikes targeted the Dar al-Arqam School in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood. According to Gaza’s Civil Defense, at least 31 people were killed, and dozens more injured. The facility was sheltering displaced Palestinians at the time. The Israeli military, for its part, claimed it was striking a Hamas “command and control center” allegedly used to orchestrate attacks on Israeli civilians and troops.

Expanding Control: The Morag Corridor and Buffer Zones

Netanyahu’s latest statements provide insight into Israel’s broader territorial ambitions. The Prime Minister specifically mentioned the Morag Corridor, an area located between Khan Younis and Rafah, as a key target for seizure. He described it as the “second Philadelphi Corridor,” referring to the strip of land along the Egypt-Gaza border that Israel has controlled for years. Experts suggest that by taking control of this corridor, Israel could effectively divide Gaza, restricting movement and creating a more fragmented Palestinian territory.

Gisha, an Israeli human rights group, has pointed out that even before the latest military campaign, Israel had expanded its control over a buffer zone along the edges of Gaza, covering approximately 52 square kilometers—17% of the Strip’s total land area. This creeping annexation could have profound long-term implications for Gaza’s governance and territorial integrity.

Strategic Military and Political Considerations

Maj. Gen. (res.) Eitan Dangot, a former Israeli official responsible for government coordination in Palestinian territories, suggested that Israel may be working toward dividing Gaza into three separate sections for tighter military control. This approach, he argued, would allow the IDF to regulate movement between regions while maintaining dominance over key transportation and supply routes.

Meanwhile, Col. (res.) Grisha Yakubovich, a former IDF official, compared the latest moves to previous Israeli strategies, such as the establishment of a security perimeter in northern Gaza. He noted that in the south, the IDF could seek to evacuate Rafah’s population and extend the buffer zone along the border with Egypt, further constraining Hamas’s operational capabilities.

Ceasefire Negotiations and Hostage Crisis

Despite ongoing military escalation, diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire remain fraught with challenges. Recent negotiations between Israel and Hamas have stalled. Israel proposed a 40-day truce in exchange for the release of 11 hostages—a counterproposal to an Egyptian-mediated plan that Hamas had previously accepted. However, Hamas rejected Israel’s terms, insisting on a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. As a result, Israel has blocked all humanitarian aid into the Strip until a ceasefire agreement is reached.

Currently, an estimated 24 hostages are still alive in Gaza, while the bodies of 35 deceased captives remain in the enclave. With no resolution in sight, mediators are struggling to reignite dialogue between the two sides.

The Humanitarian Crisis: Famine and Desperation

As the military campaign continues, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis is worsening at an alarming rate. Hunger and desperation have reached critical levels due to Israel’s blockade of essential supplies. The situation took a dramatic turn when a large crowd stormed a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) warehouse in Gaza’s Al-Tuffah neighborhood, seizing bags of flour intended for humanitarian distribution.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini decried the unfolding crisis, warning that “hunger and desperation are spreading as food and relief assistance are being weaponized.” The United Nations and other aid organizations have repeatedly called for urgent humanitarian intervention, but access to aid remains heavily restricted.

The War’s Origin and Ongoing Toll

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza stems from the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. That assault resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the taking of 251 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. In response, Israel launched a full-scale war against Hamas, which has since led to a staggering Palestinian death toll of more than 50,000, as reported by Gaza’s health ministry.

The prolonged conflict has left Gaza in ruins, with its population facing an unprecedented humanitarian disaster. International efforts to broker peace have repeatedly faltered, as both sides remain entrenched in their positions. With Israel ramping up its military strategy and Hamas resisting concessions, the region appears headed for further bloodshed and devastation.

What Lies Ahead?

As Israel intensifies its hold over Gaza, questions loom over the future of the territory. Will Israel formally annex more land, or is this a temporary military measure? Will Hamas be forced into negotiations, or will the fighting continue unabated? With civilians bearing the brunt of the violence, the international community faces increasing pressure to intervene.

For now, one thing is clear: Gaza’s future remains uncertain, and the humanitarian crisis worsens by the day. As military operations escalate and diplomatic talks stall, the people of Gaza continue to suffer the devastating consequences of war.
