LATAM Airlines Incident: Turbulence, Injury, and a Safe Landing

Written by Published

LATAM Airlines Group encountered a challenging situation when one of its planes experienced a "technical problem" during a flight from Sydney, Australia, resulting in what the airline described as a "strong movement." The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was en route to Auckland, New Zealand, before heading to its final destination in Santiago, Chile. Approximately 50 individuals were injured during the flight, prompting a significant response from emergency services. Despite the turbulence, the aircraft safely landed at Auckland Airport.

Following the incident, at least seven passengers and three crew members were taken to a local hospital for medical checks, but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. LATAM Airlines expressed regret for any inconvenience and discomfort caused to its passengers. The airline is working to gather more information about the flight and is providing support to those affected.

Passengers recounted harrowing experiences, with one describing a sudden drop in altitude that sent individuals flying and led to cabin damage. Another passenger noted that some crew members were injured, hindering their ability to assist others. Despite the brief but intense nature of the incident, the situation was swiftly managed, and the aircraft landed safely at its destination.

In response to the incident, LATAM arranged a new flight for affected passengers, scheduled to depart from Auckland at 8 p.m. local time, bound for Santiago. The airline is offering food and accommodation services to those impacted. While 12 patients were taken to a hospital for treatment, including one in serious condition, the majority of injuries were minor to moderate. LATAM Airlines and relevant authorities are collaborating to determine the cause of the incident and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
