Louisiana Alligator Hunting Lottery Opens August 20: How to Apply

Written by Published
Louisiana is getting ready for its recreational alligator hunting season, and applications for the state’s new harvest lottery will open August 20 through August 30.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will hold the recreational alligator season across eight designated harvest zones from October 1 through October 31.

Key Details for Applicants

  • Application period: August 20–30
  • Hunting season: October 1–31
  • Harvest zones: 8
  • Application fee: $50 per zone
  • Age requirement: At least 16 years old
  • Residency: Must be a legal Louisiana resident

Applications will be available only through the LDWF licensing website. Hunters can select the Lottery Applications tab, update or create their customer information, and then apply for the zone they want to hunt.

One important note: This is a new recreational alligator lottery. It is separate from Louisiana’s long-running commercial alligator harvest lottery, whose applications were completed in July.

Applicants can enter multiple zones and potentially be selected in more than one. However, the $50 application fee is charged separately for every zone application, and the fee is non-refundable.

To participate, applicants must be Louisiana residents who are at least 16 years old and meet all applicable hunter education requirements.
