Maryland Duo Cracks the Code, Wins Big in “Unlock the Cash” Lottery Game

Two Maryland women turned an ordinary day into a full-on jackpot celebration during the Maryland Lottery’s “Unlock the Cash” Second-Chance Live Game.

Tania Shreve of Brooklyn Park and Sallie Drake of Joppatowne were the lucky ones chosen from over 126,000 entries to play the exciting safe-cracking challenge at Maryland Lottery headquarters. Each contestant walked in knowing they’d score at least $5,000, but the suspense of what was inside those safes made it even more thrilling.

Here’s how it went down:

  • Six safes were loaded with cash or scratch-off tickets.

  • One by one, the players punched in their codes and waited for that magic click—the sound every player hopes for.

Drake’s first safe popped open with $2,500 cash and $300 worth of Break The Bank scratch-offs. Shreve’s turn had the room cheering when her safe revealed a whopping $15,000! Her fiancé, Tom, couldn’t hold back his excitement.

The tension ramped up again as host Mike Powell counted down for the second round. Drake added another $2,500 to her total, finishing with $5,000 plus scratch-offs, while Shreve pulled in an additional $2,500 and $300 in tickets, taking home a total of $17,500 and more chances to win.

Shreve, a grocery store worker and mom, said she’s planning to treat herself to a well-deserved vacation, while Drake, a retired Johns Hopkins employee, intends to “pay it forward.”

This was the second of three “Unlock the Cash” events since the promo kicked off in August. The final drawing happens Thursday, Nov. 6, where two more lucky players will take their shot at cracking open the cash-filled safes.
