A Massachusetts lottery player turned a $2 online wager into a massive $735,227 prize, setting a new record for the largest payout on Mass Lottery Online since the platform launched this summer.

John Duff of Hanover won the record-setting prize while playing “Timber Wolf,” an online-only eInstant game offered by the Massachusetts State Lottery.

The game allows players to wager anywhere from 50 cents to $50. Players win by uncovering a group of three or more matching symbols. There’s also a chance to trigger a $25,000 “wild jackpot.”

A $2 Bet Turns Into a Huge Win

Duff placed just a $2 wager before hitting the six-figure-plus prize. The Mass Lottery’s online system launched on July 27, making his win the biggest online payout recorded since its debut.

Duff claimed his prize before taxes at the lottery’s headquarters in Dorchester on October 1.

After finding out he had won, Duff celebrated by taking his fiancée out for a nice dinner. He said he plans to use part of the money for their upcoming wedding and put some of the winnings into savings.

Key details:

  • Prize: $735,227

Under Massachusetts rules, online lottery prizes worth $50,000 or more must be claimed in person at the lottery headquarters.
