Mom of Three Wins £1 Million Lottery Jackpot After Husband Falls for Fake Scratchcard Prank
A mother of three got the surprise of a lifetime when she discovered she had won £1 million in the lottery just weeks after playing a prank on her husband.
Charlotte Peart, 36, from Whittlesey near Peterborough, England, had previously tricked her husband, Daniel, into believing they had won £250,000 on a scratchcard. However, she quickly revealed that it was only a joke.
Just two weeks later, the couple experienced a real lottery miracle. When they discovered their actual £1 million win, they ran into each other’s arms, laughing and crying with excitement.
A Small Bet Turns Into a Million-Pound Win
Peart bought her winning ticket in 2018, when she was just 28. She used a leftover £1.50 balance in her lottery account to enter Lotto HotPicks, a game she had never played before.
The following morning, she checked her email and saw a message congratulating her on winning a prize. At first, she assumed she had won something small, such as a free lottery ticket.
But when she logged into her account, she noticed a much bigger prize amount.
Still half-asleep, Peart initially thought she had misunderstood what she was seeing. She called her husband, who was at work, to share the news.
Because of her earlier prank, Daniel wasn't immediately convinced. He had to log into her account himself before believing they had actually won.
Once the win was confirmed over the phone, the couple could hardly contain their emotions.
How the Family Celebrated Their Good Fortune
After the £1 million prize arrived in their account, the family began making plans for their future.
Their winnings helped them:
- Find a bigger home suitable for their family of five.
- Enjoy a luxury holiday to Lapland.
- Buy their children special Christmas presents, including three hoverboards.
The win also gave Peart opportunities to support her local community. She later worked with the National Lottery on charitable initiatives, including preparing vegetable boxes for frontline workers.
She also established a Ladies Circle group in Whittlesey to bring local women together.
Peart believes her story shows that good fortune can come to anyone, regardless of their background or where they live.
Is Peterborough One of the UK's Luckiest Lottery Cities?
The couple's hometown is among the UK's luckiest lottery locations, according to National Lottery figures.
Peterborough ranks ninth on the list, with 142 millionaires created since the National Lottery launched in 1994.
Other cities have recorded even more big winners:
- Birmingham: 234 millionaires
- Belfast: 202 millionaires
- Glasgow: 178 millionaires
Manchester has also enjoyed considerable success, leading the rankings for cities producing millionaires over the previous three years, with 30 winners.
However, lottery officials stress that luck isn't limited to any particular city or postcode.
Kathy Garrett, winners experience lead at Allwyn, the operator of the National Lottery, said major wins have happened in communities throughout the UK. She noted that more than 8,000 people have become millionaires since the lottery began.
Lottery Players Also Support Good Causes
Beyond the life-changing prizes, the National Lottery contributes significant funding to charitable and community projects.
Since launching in 1994, it has raised more than £53 billion for good causes, supporting approximately 680,000 projects across the UK. Players collectively generate around £33 million each week for these initiatives.
For Peart and her family, that unexpected £1 million win transformed their lives. Her experience also serves as a reminder that an ordinary day can sometimes bring an extraordinary surprise.
