Powerball Is Coming to the UK, Giving Players a Shot at Massive Shared Jackpots
The world's biggest lottery game is officially arriving in the UK. Starting this week, UK players will be able to join Americans in chasing enormous Powerball jackpots that can grow into the billions of dollars.
Lottery operator Allwyn confirmed that tickets will go on sale starting tomorrow, with the first UK Powerball draw taking place on Thursday.
How Powerball Works
Playing Powerball is simple:
- Pick five white numbers from 1 to 69
- Choose one red Powerball number from 1 to 26
- Match all six numbers to win the jackpot
One of the game's biggest attractions is that the jackpot keeps rolling over until someone wins, allowing the prize to grow to staggering amounts.
A Record-Breaking Lottery Prize
Powerball made history in November 2022 when Edwin Castro won a record $2.04 billion jackpot after purchasing a ticket in Altadena, California.
Instead of taking annual payments over 30 years, Castro chose the one-time cash payout. Before taxes, the lump sum was $997.6 million, and after taxes, he received approximately $628.5 million.
How the UK Version Is Different
UK players will pay £4 per line to enter the game and compete for the same shared jackpot as players in the United States.
The UK edition also includes a few exclusive features:
- Jackpots start at £12 million with no upper limit.
- Match two main numbers to win a fixed £8 prize, available only to UK players.
- Match all five main numbers to win a guaranteed £1 million.
- Other prize amounts will depend on the winning numbers and how many players claim prizes.
Current Powerball Jackpot
The current Powerball jackpot is estimated at $544 million, with a cash option of $241.6 million.
The cash option is lower because it represents the immediate payout instead of the full prize paid over 30 years.
What Are the Odds?
Winning the Powerball jackpot is extremely challenging.
Jackpot odds: 1 in 292 million
The odds improve for smaller prize levels, depending on how many numbers you match.
When Can UK Players Buy Tickets?
Tickets will be available online and at participating UK retailers beginning tomorrow.
Ticket sales close: 11:55 p.m. on the night before each draw.
Draw schedule:
- Draws are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays in the U.S.
- UK viewers can expect the drawings to take place at around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, live from the Powerball studio in Florida.
With its huge rolling jackpots and the chance to compete alongside U.S. players, Powerball's UK debut gives lottery fans an exciting new opportunity to chase life-changing prizes.
