South Carolina Lottery Sends Nearly $607 Million to Education, Marking One of Its Biggest Years Ever
The South Carolina Education Lottery is celebrating another milestone after announcing it will send $606.8 million to support education during Fiscal Year 2026. It marks the second-highest annual contribution in the lottery's history, falling just short of the record $607.6 million set in 2021.
Since launching in 2002, the lottery has now contributed an impressive $9.5 billion to education across the state.
Highlights from the Record-Breaking Year
- $606.8 million transferred to education
- $9.5 billion contributed since 2002
- More than $1.6 billion paid out in prizes
- Over $175 million earned by lottery retailers in commissions
- Lottery sales generate more than $1.5 million every day for education
Lottery officials credited the strong year to several factors, including the debut of debit card purchases, the growing popularity of $20 scratch-off tickets, upgraded in-store ticket displays, and excitement surrounding two Powerball jackpots worth more than $1 billion.
Board Chairman Sam Litchfield praised the lottery's continued success, saying the funding helps strengthen South Carolina's education system and supports students across the state. CEO Dolly Garfield also called the results a perfect way to head into the lottery's 25th anniversary celebration coming up in January.
The money raised through ticket sales is deposited into the state's Education Lottery Account. Lawmakers then distribute those funds to public education initiatives, classroom resources, and scholarship programs, including the Palmetto Fellows, LIFE, and HOPE Scholarships, helping thousands of students pursue higher education.
A Reminder About Responsible Gambling
While the lottery continues to provide major financial support for education, experts also point out the importance of responsible play. According to WalletHub, South Carolina ranks among the nation's higher states for gambling addiction concerns, even though many other forms of gambling remain restricted.
Common warning signs of problem gambling include:
- Constantly thinking about gambling
- Feeling the need to bet larger amounts or gamble more often
- Trying to recover previous losses by continuing to gamble
- Struggling to stop or control gambling
- Continuing to gamble despite financial or personal consequences
The South Carolina Lottery's latest results showcase another successful year for education funding while also serving as a reminder that lottery games should always be enjoyed responsibly.
