A Spokane resident’s dream of seeing his favorite national soccer team up close didn’t go as planned, even though the team’s arrival in the city felt almost unreal to him at first.
The Egyptian national team held its only open practice in Spokane ahead of World Cup group play, and seats were extremely limited. The city used a lottery system to decide who could attend, turning the rare event into a tough luck-of-the-draw situation for many fans.
For longtime supporter Jaffar Allaet, it was especially disappointing. He had followed Team Egypt for years and couldn’t believe the news when he first heard they were coming to his city.
He recalled his initial reaction as pure shock and disbelief, saying he didn’t think it could be real at first—until he confirmed it was actually happening.
His family tried everything they could to get him a spot. His daughter, Yasmeen Lutchendorf, said they entered the lottery hoping for a win, but unfortunately came up empty.
She described the situation as surreal, pointing out the “once-in-a-lifetime” feeling of having her father’s favorite team and favorite player right where they live, yet still not being able to get tickets.
Even with the disappointment, Allaet’s passion for soccer hasn’t slowed down. He stays up early and follows international matches closely, especially because of his admiration for star player Mohamed Salah.
- He called Salah “the best player in the world” in his eyes
- He remains a dedicated fan of both local and international soccer
- Missing the practice didn’t change his love for the game
Security around Gonzaga University was noticeably tighter before the team’s session. Extra patrols were on duty, police presence increased, and some campus areas were temporarily restricted to manage the event safely.
Even without getting inside, Allaet still expressed gratitude for the city bringing such a high-profile team to Spokane. He encouraged those who did win tickets to fully enjoy the moment, calling it a rare opportunity.
He said it’s not every day fans get to watch world-class players train up close and added that Spokane was lucky to host an event of this level, even if not everyone could experience it firsthand.
