Sturgis Player Wins $25K a Year in Lucky for Life

A lucky player in Sturgis could be set for life after hitting the second prize in Wednesday’s Lucky for Life drawing. The winning ticket, purchased at Kwik Mart on 2217 Junction Ave., matched 5 of 5 numbers and just missed the jackpot by the Lucky Ball. The winning numbers were 1, 20, 30, 37, 46 with a Lucky Ball of 1.

The prize gives the winner a choice: $25,000 a year for life or a one-time payout of $390,000. Historically, most second prize winners in South Dakota have gone for the lump sum—11 out of 12 winners, to be exact—leaving only one person to opt for the annual payout.

Wade LaRoche, South Dakota Lottery’s Director of Advertising and Public Relations, noted that Wednesday’s winner has yet to claim their prize. This win comes just days after Friday’s second prize winner, whose ticket was purchased at Boyd’s Drug Mart in Rapid City.

Since Lucky for Life launched in South Dakota in 2017, the state has seen 12 second prize winners and even hosted a jackpot winner, who opted for $1,000 a day rather than the lump sum of $5.75 million.

South Dakota’s lottery also gives back big to the community. On average, it returns $501,000 per day to the state, with last year’s total earnings of $178 million benefiting education, roads, and natural resources.

For the Sturgis winner, the choice between steady lifetime payments or a lump sum is more than just a math decision—it’s the start of a life-changing moment.
