A tragic incident occurred at Club Oasis in West Point, Mississippi, last Sunday, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to as many as 12 others in a mass shooting, according to Mississippi law enforcement officials.
The shooting took place early Sunday inside the club, as reported by Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott to CNN. Upon arrival, deputies found a 20-year-old woman dead. The injuries of the other victims ranged from minor to serious, with one individual sustaining a gunshot wound to the face.
Sheriff Scott disclosed that the party where the shooting occurred had been advertised, drawing attendees from different counties. Surprisingly, about 90% of the partygoers were from outside the county. Despite the club having security, it remains unclear how a weapon was smuggled inside.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a security guard chasing the suspected shooter, who was believed to be armed with some type of rifle, across the parking lot and a four-lane highway, eventually disappearing into the nearby woods.
The club was reportedly packed with "several hundred" individuals at the time of the incident. Authorities are in the process of verifying the exact number of attendees and are examining the possibility of surveillance footage from inside the club being available.
Although the club is mandated to have security cameras, the owner claimed they were not functioning on the night of the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. This incident adds to the tally of mass shootings in the United States, which has seen 66 such incidents this year alone, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
