Wizards Win No. 1 Pick in 2026 NBA Draft Lottery

Written by Published

The future is finally looking brighter for the Washington Wizards. After a rough stretch over the last few seasons, the franchise just scored a massive win at the NBA Draft Lottery by landing the No. 1 overall pick for the first time since 2010. That year, the team selected John Wall, who later became a five-time All-Star. Interestingly, Wall was also in Chicago to represent the Wizards during the lottery announcement.

This latest moment gives Washington fans real hope after the team finished with the NBA’s worst record at 17-65. Over the past three years, the Wizards have gone just 50-196 and haven’t reached the playoffs in five straight seasons. Still, the front office has been aggressive lately, bringing in veteran stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young during the winter in an effort to rebuild the roster quickly.

Big Winners From the Lottery

A few other teams also walked away happy after the draft order was revealed:

  • Utah Jazz grabbed the No. 2 pick
  • Memphis Grizzlies landed at No. 3
  • Chicago Bulls made a huge jump to No. 4 despite only having 4.5% odds

The Wizards, Indiana Pacers, and Brooklyn Nets each entered the lottery with a 14% chance of winning the top pick.

Team president Michael Winger called the result “another encouraging day” for the franchise and said the organization is excited to add another young star to its growing core.

The Race for No. 1 Is Loaded With Talent

This year’s draft class is packed with exciting names, and several young stars are already drawing major attention ahead of the draft on June 23-24 in New York City.

The top two names expected to battle for the No. 1 spot are:

  • AJ Dybantsa, the explosive BYU guard who averaged 25.5 points per game
  • Darryn Peterson, the talented Kansas guard who put up 20.2 points despite dealing with injuries

Dybantsa admitted just before the lottery that becoming the top overall pick has been a major goal for him.

Other projected top prospects include:

  • Cameron Boozer
  • Caleb Wilson
  • Darius Acuff
  • Keaton Wagler
  • Mikel Brown Jr.

Rest of the Top 10 Draft Order

The Los Angeles Clippers ended up with the fifth pick thanks to a previous trade with the Pacers involving Ivica Zubac and Bennedict Mathurin.

Here’s how the rest of the top 10 shaped up:

  1. Brooklyn Nets
  2. Sacramento Kings
  3. Atlanta Hawks
  4. Dallas Mavericks
  5. Milwaukee Bucks

The Golden State Warriors hold the 11th pick, while the Oklahoma City Thunder own the 12th selection from the famous Paul George trade that also brought MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to Oklahoma City.

Rounding out the lottery are the Miami Heat at No. 13 and the Charlotte Hornets with the final lottery pick.

Why This Matters

For Washington, this could be the franchise-changing moment fans have been waiting for.

A new No. 1 pick + veteran stars + young talent = a fresh start for the Wizards.
