Giants' Offseason Kickoff: Strong Turnout, Slayton's Contract Standoff

The New York Giants kicked off their voluntary offseason workout program with a bang on Monday, and head coach Brian Daboll was all smiles about the turnout. "We had a very good turnout," he told reporters, clearly impressed.

However, there's one conspicuous absence: star wide receiver Darius Slayton. According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Slayton hasn't shown up in East Rutherford and doesn't seem to have any immediate plans to do so. He's holding out for a new contract from the Giants.

Slayton, who signed a two-year, $12.2 million contract with the Giants last offseason, is set to earn $6.2 million in 2024. Despite leading the team in receiving in four of the past five seasons, he believes he deserves more.

The wideout has put up solid numbers, with 220 receptions for 3,324 yards and 19 touchdowns in 76 career games. He's been a reliable performer, but with the Giants likely eyeing a top receiver in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft, Slayton's chances of landing a hefty new contract seem slim.

Slayton could earn $350,000 in workout bonuses this spring, but he seems willing to forgo those in pursuit of a more lucrative deal.

Meanwhile, tight end Darren Waller is also a no-show at the voluntary workouts as he mulls over the possibility of retirement.
