Box Office Clash: 'Civil War' vs. 'Abigail' in Weekend Showdown

With spring break in full swing, about 8% of K-12 students are on break, while 1% of college students are enjoying their time off. This mix of vacation schedules is reflected at the weekend box office, creating a diverse lineup until 20th Century Studios’ highly anticipated film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, hits theaters with an expected opening of over $50 million during the second weekend of May.

A24’s Civil War, currently sitting at $27 million as of Monday with an additional $1.9 million yesterday, will face a challenge defending its No. 1 spot from Universal’s Abigail, directed by Radio Silence. Both films are projected to earn around $12 million, marking a 53% decline for Civil War, which would still be a strong performance. Civil War will be shown in Imax theaters alongside Sony/Crunchyroll’s anime Spy x Family Code: White and the documentary Deep Sky, directed by Nathaniel Kahn.

Abigail, starring Melissa Barrera, Angus Cloud, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, and Kevin Durand, follows a group of kidnappers who target a 12-year-old ballerina, Abigail, for a $50 million ransom. As they watch over her in a remote mansion, they begin to realize they are trapped with something far from a normal little girl. The movie, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, targets a young adult audience, with previews starting on Thursday at 5 p.m. and earning positive reviews, currently at 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lionsgate’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, directed by Guy Ritchie, is expected to earn mid single-digit figures, similar to Ritchie’s previous film, The Covenant. The film, based on declassified files of the British war department and inspired by true events, tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII. Starring Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Henry Golding, and Cary Elwes, the movie has received positive reviews, currently at 81% fresh.

Spy x Family Code: White, directed by Takashi Katagiri, is the first film adaptation of the TV series and features a stand-alone story with secret agent <Twilight>, his assassin wife Yor, and their telepathic adopted daughter Anya on a new mission. Based on the manga by Tatsuya Endo, the movie will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. With 4 p.m. Thursday previews in 1,870 sites out of its 2,000 engagements, the film is expected to attract fans of the original series, which debuted on April 9, 2022, with the first two seasons available on Crunchyroll.
