Book Soup, the renowned bookstore in West Hollywood, had to cancel the appearance of “Stranger Things” actor Brett Gelman on his debut book tour due to safety concerns. This is the third stop on his tour to be canceled, following objections and incensed messages received in protest of the event.
Gelman, known for his support of Israel, has faced backlash for his views. Despite hiring personal security for the event, Book Soup felt it was necessary to cancel, citing safety concerns for Gelman, their staff, and attendees.
The cancellation is part of a larger pattern where institutions are avoiding appearances by authors with views on the Israel-Hamas conflict to prevent controversy. Gelman believes Book Soup succumbed to antisemitic intimidation by canceling the event.
In light of recent disruptions and cancellations, Gelman emphasizes the importance of civil dialogue and understanding, especially on divisive topics like the Israel-Hamas war. He hopes to reschedule his events at local Jewish community centers and temples to continue the conversation.
