Kevin Spacey is hitting back at fresh accusations of sexual harassment and assault ahead of the Channel 4 documentary, Spacey Unmasked, scheduled to debut in the U.K. on May 6-7.
During a lengthy interview titled Kevin Spacey: Right of Reply, streamed on X (formerly Twitter), Spacey expressed a resolve not to stay silent in the face of these new allegations. He emphasized, "I've got nothing left to hide," reflecting on his previous legal battles in the U.S. and the U.K. regarding similar accusations. Spacey voiced his refusal to be attacked without defending himself, stating, "I can't go through this again."
While acknowledging past interactions involving flirting or hooking up with fellow actors, Spacey vehemently denied engaging in any illegal activities. He took full responsibility for his actions but refused to apologize for or admit to false or exaggerated claims against him. The tight deadline given by Channel 4 to respond to the documentary's accusations reminded him of a similar rush he experienced in 2017 when responding to sexual misconduct allegations first publicized by BuzzFeed News.
Spacey reflected on the impact of coming out as gay in the midst of addressing these allegations, admitting that the timing was poorly considered. Despite past failures to fully address accusations, he expressed readiness to confront his past inappropriate behavior.
Addressing the power dynamics in Hollywood, Spacey questioned why studios and networks continued to work with him if he was truly a "monster." He also pointed out that he was not in a position of authority over the individuals he was involved with romantically.
Spacey acknowledged making efforts over the past decade to make amends but did not specify to whom. He criticized the idea of publicly apologizing on platforms like Oprah or Anderson Cooper, emphasizing that his apologies were personal and not for public consumption.
Despite expressing a desire for redemption and taking responsibility, Spacey lamented the lack of a clear path for him to return to Hollywood, feeling as though he has been "canceled forever," which he described as a "life sentence."
