The upcoming 2024 NFL Draft should definitely have the Colts and Chris Ballard thinking about quarterbacks. Even though Anthony Richardson looks like the man for the job right now, having a young gun waiting in the wings could be a smart move.
While Joe Flacco is holding down the fort as the backup this season, he's no spring chicken at almost 40 years old. So, it wouldn't be surprising if the Colts are eyeing a rookie who could step up as the backup in 2025.
Sam Ehlinger is on the roster, but with his limited experience and the recent signings of Minshew and Flacco, it doesn't seem like the Colts see him as the long-term answer for the backup role.
Having depth at quarterback is crucial, as last season showed with 50 different quarterbacks taking snaps. Whether it's due to performance issues or injuries, having a solid backup is a must.
Now, the Colts shouldn't be using an early pick on a QB, but if the right guy is available on Day 3, they should pull the trigger.
Joining the Colts would give any rookie QB a chance to learn from Richardson and Flacco while also competing with Ehlinger for that third spot.
Looking at some under-the-radar QB prospects, there are some interesting names like Jordan Travis, Austin Reed, and Taulia Tagovailoa who could be worth a Day 3 pick.
On Day 3, the Colts have four picks, and they have some pressing needs at receiver, cornerback, safety, and edge rusher. They could also consider tight end, running back, and interior offensive line depending on how they feel about their current depth.
