Broncos Eyeing Illinois' Jer'Zhan "Johnny" Newton at Pro Day

The Denver Broncos showed up big time for Illinois' pro day to check out defensive lineman Jer'Zhan "Johnny" Newton. Even though Newton didn't test at the NFL combine or his pro day due to a Jones fracture, he still drew plenty of attention. Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz reported that the Broncos were one of the 21 NFL teams present at Newton's personal pro day on April 16.

Newton, standing at 6-2 and weighing 304 pounds, had an impressive college career with the Fighting Illini. Over four years, he racked up 187 tackles, including 27.5 for a loss, along with 18 sacks, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 44 games. His standout performance in 2023 earned him first-team All-American honors and the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year award. He was also a finalist for the Nagurski Trophy, which recognizes college football's top defender each year.

With the NFL draft just around the corner, Newton is expected to be a second-half first-round pick. The Broncos, who currently have the 12th overall pick, could be eyeing Newton if they decide to trade down. The 2024 NFL draft is set to take place in Detroit from April 25-27, and we're keeping tabs on all the prospects the Broncos are meeting with leading up to the big event on Broncos Wire.
