- Key Highlights:
- Return of the Star: Soto’s back in his usual spot, easing into the lineup as DH due to his recent arm issue.
- Manager’s Insight: Aaron Boone shared, “We’ve just kind of been basing it on how he’s coming in each day, where the improvements are, how he’s feeling.”
Remember the panic last Thursday when Soto was pulled from the game with forearm discomfort after a rain delay? Thankfully, the imaging on Friday cleared him from an extended absence. However, the Yankees will still keep a close eye on his condition to prevent any worsening of his discomfort.
While Soto's return is a breath of fresh air, Monday’s lineup looks quite different. Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and Giancarlo Stanton are all on the bench. Stepping in are Jahmai Jones in right field, DJ LeMahieu hitting cleanup at first base, and Gleyber Torres taking the No. 3 spot behind Soto.
Boone had anticipated giving Judge a rest day, especially after their late arrival in Kansas City following Sunday Night Baseball at Yankee Stadium. “Obviously he’s playing out of this world,” Boone said, “but having played every day and you get into this time of year, you’re going to get beat up too. It’s important to get one, especially after getting in at three in the morning. This was one I had worked in.” Even with Judge being the hottest hitter in baseball recently, Boone acknowledged, “I never like him out of the lineup of course, but no, I feel like he needs a day.”
Rizzo’s absence is due to his ongoing offensive struggles, marking his second consecutive game on the bench. Batting a mere .034 (1-for-29) in June, Rizzo is taking a step back to regroup. Boone mentioned it’s a mix of mechanical adjustments and giving Rizzo a mental break from his slump.
With Soto back and some stars resting, the Yankees are hoping to find the right balance to power through the series against the Royals.
