Marcedes Lewis: Veteran Comeback with the Chicago Bears

Written by Published

Marcedes Lewis is officially back in the navy and orange!

Highlights:

  • Re-signed with the Chicago Bears on a one-year deal.
  • Despite being 40, still one of the top blockers in the league.
  • Exciting potential to break Jason Witten's record for most games played by a tight end.

Lewis joined the Bears last summer on a one-year deal, bringing veteran leadership to a young team. His impressive journey in the NFL started back in 2006 as a first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he later spent five years with the Green Bay Packers. Even at his age, Lewis demonstrated his exceptional blocking skills, ranking fifth among tight ends with a 77.1 PFF run-blocking grade. Last season, he played an integral role as the team’s extra lineman, contributing four catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Now, Lewis is back, but with new faces in key positions. Gone are his former offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and teammate Robert Tonyan, both of whom were crucial in bringing him to Chicago. Additionally, quarterback Justin Fields was traded in the offseason. This season, he will join an offense led by offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Lewis will also reunite with tight end Cole Kmet and work alongside newcomer Gerald Everett, who signed a two-year deal in the offseason.

On Monday, the 40-year-old tight end re-signed with the Bears, agreeing to a one-year deal just a day after reports from FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer suggested the two sides would meet to discuss a deal.

Entering his 19th season, Lewis has seen it all at the NFL level and will be a valuable veteran for Williams and the Bears to lean on. He has a chance to make history by breaking Jason Witten's record for most games played by a tight end. With just four games needed to surpass Witten and having played all 17 games in 2023, this milestone is well within reach for Lewis.
