Yale has stirred up the 2024 March Madness, causing yet another upset in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs, seeded 13th, triumphed over the 4th seeded Auburn with a close score of 78-76 in the East Region game held at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Washington. The victory was sealed when Auburn's Tre Donaldson missed crucial free throws, followed by Jaylin Williams' failed layup attempt and K.D. Johnson's missed game-winning 3-pointer in the final six seconds of regulation.
The defeat dealt a blow to the SEC, dropping its record to 1-5 in the NCAA Tournament. Earlier, 7th seed Florida fell to 10th seed Colorado, while 3rd seed Kentucky lost its opening game against 14th seed Oakland. Yale's next challenge will be against 6th seed Clemson, who defeated 11th seed New Mexico with a score of 77-56.
Despite holding a 41-34 lead at halftime, Auburn's momentum was hindered by a possible injury to their star player, Johni Broome. This setback allowed Yale to take a lead by as much as four points in the final minute. Nevertheless, Auburn managed to keep the game close and had an opportunity to tie or win.
Social media platforms, including X (formerly known as Twitter), were abuzz with reactions to Auburn's unexpected loss. Fans were particularly harsh on the SEC team, especially given their significant advantage in the matchup.
