Copenhagen's iconic old stock exchange was engulfed in a massive fire, leading to the dramatic collapse of its spire. The building, known for its unique spire shaped like the tail of four dragons, became a spectacle as bystanders watched in shock.
The fire broke out around 8:30 a.m. local time, quickly escalating and causing significant damage to the historic structure. Emergency responders rushed to the scene as black smoke billowed from the landmark.
Efforts to save valuable paintings and artifacts from inside the building were underway, with firefighters and citizens working together to salvage what they could. Thankfully, all occupants were safely evacuated, and there have been no reported injuries.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed sorrow over the loss, highlighting the cultural significance of the building, which has been a central part of Danish business since the 17th century. The fire is a blow to Denmark's cultural heritage, with 400 years of history damaged, according to Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt.
Despite the efforts of emergency services, the fire continued to rage inside the building, spreading through the elevator shaft to all floors. Firefighters faced challenges due to the nature of the fire, which required removing parts of the roof for better access.
The blaze serves as a reminder of the fragility of historical landmarks and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. The Danish Chamber of Commerce, based in the building, described the scene as "a terrible sight," reflecting the widespread shock and sadness over the incident.
