The White House on Monday steered clear of commenting on any potential Israeli response to Iran's weekend attack, emphasizing the desire to avoid further escalation in the region. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby made it clear that the decision on whether and how to respond lies with Israel, stating, "This is an Israeli decision to make."
When asked if the administration was offering suggestions to Israeli officials, Kirby reiterated that the U.S. was not involved in their decision-making process regarding a potential response. He mentioned that President Biden highlighted Israel's military superiority over Iran and the coalition of partners ready to defend Israel, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to consider what this success means for the region.
During a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Biden reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel's security and to a cease-fire. However, he did not elaborate on what actions Israel should take in response to Iran's attack.
Netanyahu convened with his war cabinet to discuss potential responses to Iran's attack. While there is agreement that Israel must respond, the nature of the response is still under consideration.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell criticized the Biden administration for its response, accusing it of trying to restrict Israel's ability to defend itself. McConnell called on the president to stand by allies and oppose adversaries.
The attack on Israel on April 13 was seen as retaliation for a military strike on what Iran claimed was its consulate in Damascus, Syria. Israel's Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi visited the airbase struck by Iranian missiles, stating that Iran's actions "will be met with a response."
Despite Biden's warning to Iran, Kirby emphasized that the U.S. stepping in to aid Israel during Saturday's attack should send a clear message that the U.S. takes its commitments seriously.
Kirby also denied reports that Iran provided advance notice of its plans to strike Israel, calling such claims "ludicrous" and "categorically false."
He highlighted Israel's strengthened position and Iran's weakened stance after Israel, with the help of the U.S. and other partners, thwarted hundreds of missiles and drones unleashed by Tehran over the weekend. Kirby mentioned that G7 partners are working on new sanctions to target Iran's missile program, demonstrating a more unified alliance against Iran.
