Israeli forces have escalated their military campaign in the Gaza Strip, with airstrikes intensifying across the region on Thursday. The Israeli military issued further evacuation orders, leading to the displacement of even more Palestinians, particularly from northern Gaza, creating a fresh wave of refugees. Many fear that they will never be able to return to their homes once they leave.
Among the latest attacks, Palestinian health officials reported that at least 10 people were killed and many others wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza City. This school, which had been housing displaced families, was located in the Shati refugee camp. The Israeli military, however, claimed that the strike was aimed at a Hamas command center hidden within the compound, which had once served as a UN-run school. Israel has consistently accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure for military purposes, though Hamas denies these charges.
The bombardment continued as Israeli tanks advanced in Beit Lahiya, in northern Gaza. This was part of a broader strategy to target Hamas militants, and many local families fled the area, seeking refuge in schools and shelters across Gaza City. The displaced people arrived with whatever belongings they could carry, but many are struggling to find enough food and supplies. Drones hovered overhead, broadcasting evacuation orders, and these messages were also sent via social media, text messages, and audio alerts to residents' phones.
One displaced man, identified only as Ahmed for fear of repercussions, spoke to Reuters about the horror unfolding in his neighborhood. "After they displaced most or all of the people in Jabalia, now they are bombing everywhere, killing people on the roads and inside their houses to force everyone out," he explained. Palestinian authorities have condemned these actions as a form of "ethnic cleansing." In addition, residents in Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoun, and Jabalia have reported that no aid has reached these areas since the conflict intensified on October 5.
Israel maintains that it had no choice but to clear out northern Gaza, including Jabalia and Beit Lahiya, to fight Hamas militants who had regrouped there. The Israeli military has denied reports claiming that people who were evacuated from these areas would not be allowed to return to their homes. According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), aid is still being allowed into northern Gaza, with 300 trucks of humanitarian supplies, including those from the UAE, arriving at the Ashdod port. The aid is being funneled into Gaza through crossings in the north (Erez) and south (Kerem Shalom).
In the meantime, new evacuation orders were issued for areas within Gaza City itself. These orders covered several neighborhoods, including the northern part of the Shati camp, which has been a key focal point for displaced people. The orders were tied to reports of rocket launches from Gaza City by Palestinian militants. The situation has become increasingly dire as both sides continue to claim military victories, while the humanitarian crisis deepens.
The ongoing violence has led to many casualties on both sides. In Jabalia, the largest of Gaza's eight historic refugee camps, six people were reported killed by Israeli fire. Four others died in Beit Lahiya, while seven more were killed in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza near the border with Egypt. In a particularly tragic development, Palestinian media reported that dozens of people had been killed or wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a house belonging to the Mabhouh family in Jabalia. However, the Israeli military claimed that it was not aware of this specific incident when asked for comment.
The toll on Gaza's civilian population continues to rise, with more than 43,300 Palestinians reported dead in over a year of conflict. The violence initially flared up after the Hamas-led militant group launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people in Israel and the abduction of 251 hostages who were taken to Gaza. Since then, the fighting has spread to the West Bank as well, with numerous clashes between Palestinian groups and Israeli security forces. In Tulkarm, a city in the West Bank, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian man during a raid, and an Israeli drone attack wounded five others, including a mother and her son, both of whom have learning difficulties.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, many Palestinians are also anxiously watching developments in the United States, particularly the upcoming presidential election. There is growing concern among some Palestinians that if former President Donald Trump wins re-election, U.S. support for Israel under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be strengthened. Trump has consistently portrayed himself as a staunch ally of Israel, and his policies have often aligned with those of the Israeli government. In contrast, incumbent President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have faced criticism from certain factions within the Palestinian community for their handling of the conflict.
Amidst all of this, the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations continue to push for a ceasefire and greater access for aid to reach the people of Gaza. However, both Israel and Hamas show little indication of easing their respective military operations, and the civilian population continues to bear the brunt of the violence. In Gaza, many of the 2.3 million residents have been forced to flee their homes, with no safe places left to turn. As the war drags on, the suffering of the Palestinian people grows, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza reaches catastrophic levels.
Palestinian and UN officials have emphasized that there are no truly safe areas within Gaza, which is now almost entirely a war zone. The widespread destruction has made it difficult for anyone, including the wounded, to find refuge. With aid organizations reporting that they are unable to deliver the necessary supplies to large portions of Gaza, the situation continues to worsen.
Both sides in this long-running conflict have suffered heavy casualties, with Palestinians suffering the brunt of the losses. Hundreds of Palestinians, including militants, stone-throwing youth, and civilians, have been killed in the West Bank and Gaza over the past year. The Israeli security forces have been engaged in frequent clashes with Palestinian protesters, armed groups, and fighters, while the IDF claims it is targeting Hamas militants and other militant groups.
Despite the overwhelming loss of life, both sides continue to escalate their actions. For Palestinians, the hope of ever returning to normalcy seems increasingly out of reach, while for Israel, the aim of dismantling Hamas and securing long-term peace remains an elusive goal. As this conflict continues to unfold, the international community watches with bated breath, hoping for a resolution but fearing that the cycle of violence may continue unabated for the foreseeable future.
