NYC Residents Score $50 World Cup Tickets While New Jersey Misses Out
A lucky group of New Yorkers is getting a rare chance to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup without spending thousands of dollars. New York City announced that 1,000 tickets will be sold for just $50 each, along with free round-trip bus rides to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Meanwhile, New Jersey — despite investing more than $307 million into hosting the tournament — was unable to secure a similar deal for its residents.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed the program on Thursday, saying the affordable ticket package came after direct talks with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The offer includes:
- Five group-stage matches
- Two knockout-round games
- Free transportation to and from MetLife Stadium
- A public lottery system for ticket access
Speaking in Harlem’s Little Senegal neighborhood, Mamdani said many fans have been priced out as ticket costs continue climbing into the thousands.
“Working people shouldn’t be shut out from the world’s biggest soccer event,” he explained during the announcement.
The contrast has frustrated many in New Jersey. Regular resale prices for the first MetLife Stadium match are already starting near $1,858 for upper-level seats, while premium games are reaching into the tens of thousands online.
At the same time, New Jersey officials say taxpayers are covering massive tournament-related expenses, including:
- Stadium upgrades
- Infrastructure improvements
- Host committee funding
Governor Mikie Sherrill reportedly asked for a ticket allocation similar to NYC’s deal but was turned down.
Her spokesperson, Stephen Sigmund, criticized FIFA’s handling of ticket affordability while highlighting the state’s efforts to reduce costs in other ways, including transit discounts for impacted commuters.
Host Committee CEO Alex Lasry praised NYC’s push for accessible pricing, saying the city strongly advocated for affordable access from the beginning.
Not everyone is impressed, though. Representatives Frank Pallone and Nellie Pou called the program a “publicity stunt,” arguing that 1,000 tickets spread across seven games barely makes a dent in overall availability.
According to ESPN, New Jersey is now exploring its own discounted ticket program backed by corporate sponsors, though no launch date has been announced yet.
