A $10 scratch-off ticket turned into a million-dollar payday for Mark Sanderson of Williamston, North Carolina.

Sanderson purchased the winning 50X The Cash ticket on Friday at Williamston Family Fare on West Main Street. According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, his ticket matched the game's $1 million top prize.

When he visited lottery headquarters to claim his winnings, Sanderson had two payout options:

  • $50,000 annually for 20 years, totaling $1 million.

  • $600,000 as a one-time lump-sum payment.

He decided to take the lump-sum option. After mandatory tax withholdings, he walked away with $432,063.

The 50X The Cash game launched in January with 12 top prizes worth $1 million each. Following Sanderson's win, nine $1 million prizes are still waiting to be claimed.
