You know, last weekend's "Saturday Night Live" had Ramy Youssef kick things off with one heck of an opening monologue. He's the dude from "Poor Things," you know, that movie that got an Oscar nod. Ramy, being Ramy, dove right in, mixing the spiritual with the downright hilarious.
He kicked it off light, saying, “This is an incredibly spiritual weekend. We’re in the holy month of Ramadan. Tomorrow is Easter. And yesterday, Beyoncé dropped a new album. There’s just so much going on all at once, man!”
Then he got into some real talk about his friend group, how he’s the one who’s into prayer while his buddies are, well, let’s just say they’re not exactly choirboys. Ramy’s like their go-to prayer guy when they're in a jam. He told this story about praying for a pal who was fighting for custody of his dog. Can you imagine that? Custody battles over pets? But it gets even more real when he mentions praying for another friend's family stuck in Gaza.
He described how his prayers that night were all over the place, trying to cover everything from stopping suffering and violence to freeing hostages and even Mr. Bojangles, the dog. And the crowd was eating it up!
But Ramy’s not just about the laughs. He’s been using his platform to speak out about the Gaza situation for a while now. At the Oscars, he made it clear: ceasefire now. He’s all about peace and justice, especially for the folks in Palestine. It’s a big deal for him, and he’s not alone. He’s part of this growing list of artists using their voices for good.
And speaking of "SNL" hosts getting real, remember when Pete Davidson came back and got serious about the Israel-Gaza conflict? It was unexpected, but he nailed it. He shared his own experience with tragedy and how seeing those images of suffering hit him hard. Kids suffering, no matter where they're from, that's something that hits home for a lot of us. Pete reminded us that in times like these, empathy and understanding go a long way.
