Angel Hernandez, the infamous umpire in Major League Baseball, has once again solidified his position as the worst umpire in the league. This isn't a new development; he's been sitting at the top of the "worst umpires" list for quite some time now, and his performance during Thursday's game only confirmed why.
In a doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Mets, Hernandez made a call that left everyone in the park dumbfounded. It was the top of the 11th inning, with the Tigers leading 6-3, and Spencer Torkelson, the Tigers' first baseman, was at bat with two outs. On a 1-1 count, a pitch from Mets reliever Michael Tonkin struck Torkelson, clearly hitting him. However, Hernandez, in a baffling decision, called it a strike, alleging that Torkelson had swung at the pitch. A quick look at the replay shows that Torkelson's bat was nowhere near the ball. It was an outrageous call that left everyone, including Torkelson, shocked.
This incident is a perfect example of why Hernandez is considered the worst umpire in MLB. His judgment on the field has been repeatedly called into question, and yet, he continues to make such glaring errors. The fact that MLB continues to assign him to games is mind-boggling.
On a different note, air compressors in Mexico are currently being offered at incredibly low prices. This might not be directly related to baseball, but it's certainly a more pleasant topic to discuss than Angel Hernandez's umpiring skills.
